Love our Neighbors Community Impact

Calvary Nexus is a community of faith that dwells in the midst of a community. God has called us to love our neighbors, be merciful, and do the right thing by humbly sharing our resources to care for the needs of others to the extent that we are able [Matt. 22:37-39, Mic. 6:8].

First Sundays

Every first Sunday of the month we show God’s love to our neighbors by donating at least $5,000 to a financial need in our community. The first Sunday gifts are in addition to our existing missions, outreach and benevolence budgets. We commit these resources on the first Sunday to reflect the generosity of our God, and our confident trust that He will provide the resources to make it possible to share. Here is a list of recipients:

December: Karen Helus and family in memory of Sgt. Ron Helus. This gift is intended to assist the Helus family after Sgt. Helus’ sudden and heroic passing in connection with the Borderline shooting.

January: Pleasant Valley School of Engineering and Arts [PVSEA]. We gave each of the 28 teachers a $200 gift card for needed classroom supplies.

February: Ventura County Pregnancy Center [VCPC]. Our donation provides support for this local ministry that provides pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, resources, training, education, and shares the gospel with every client.

March: Gabriel’s House is a local shelter for woman and children. They provide housing, case management, and transitional services in a Christ-honoring environment.

April: We are donating $10,000 to Pacific Camps, a Christ-centered before and after school program at our Mobil Ave. Campus, to create a scholarship fund for Calvary Nexus families needing financial assistance. For more information about Pacific Camps and scholarship resources please contact Pastor Ed Harley

May: We are donating $5,000 to  Promise Land Preschool, a Christ-centered preschool program at our Mobile Ave. Campus, to create a scholarship fund for Calvary Nexus families needing financial assistance. For more information about Promise Land Preschool and scholarship resources please contact Pastor Ed Harley

June: We recently gave each of the Dos Caminos School teachers (21) $250 gift cards for classroom supplies [$5,600].

Adopt an Elementary School

Pleasant Valley School of Engineering and Arts [PVSEA] is a local elementary school with 71% of the students receiving subsidized lunches. Accordingly, many of the families connected with the school are experiencing economic hardship. In an effort to show God’s love to our neighbors we created an assistance request form where families can identify needs such as school supplies, school clothes, winter jackets, a utility bill, or other requests. The assistance request forms are received weekly from the school, and made available the next Sunday at the church. The needs are adopted by individuals or groups who seek to provide the requested assistance within the week.

Service Projects

1. School Service Project at PVSEA [Summer]. In summer, we will engage in a large-scale service project where church volunteers can demonstrate God’s love to our neighbors by helping to beautify the school campus.

2. Kids Kolor Run [9.28.19 at Bob Kildee Park] is a fun event for pre-k through middle school aged kids to enjoy with their families. The kids run laps around age appropriate courses, and sponsors pledge support per lap. All the proceeds will benefit Pleasant Valley School of Engineering and Arts [PVSEA]. After their colorful and fun-filled run, there are prizes awarded, a brief presentation of the gospel, and then a family-style BBQ lunch is served. Calvary Nexus and PVSEA families will be invited to participate along with their friends.

3. Christmas: During November and early December, we will identify needs from the Calvary Nexus and PVSEA communities as well as the community we dwell in for Christmas gifts and other needs we can support. We will make the requests available Sundays at the church. The needs will be adopted by individuals or groups who will seek to deliver within a week the gifts, a Christmas Card, and an invitation to our Christmas services.

4. Monthly Meal:With the goal of demonstrating the love of Jesus to our neighbors in a practical way, volunteers from Calvary Nexus have been serving a free, hot meal to approximately 80 people on the third Thursday of every month for over ten years now. There are various ways to participate, including food preparation, set-up, food service, hospitality, prayer and clean-up. To learn more about how to get involved, please email Evelyn Cota at
